This design is a traditional pattern, whereby the gold has a braided pattern adorned with balls to the front, forming rows across the finger. They can be anything from 1 row wide up to 6, in this case it is 3. There is some debate on the meaning, which appears lost in time. It can either be functional, in that this was added to keep an existing more valuable ring from slipping form the finger and thus being lost. Alternatively they have been given as a love token, ie. the giver thought that the recipient was a keeper!
The design is 11mm wide to the front tapering to 3mm at the rear. There is a sponsor or makers mark of MJ alongside a hallmark indicating 9ct gold,, having been assayed in London in 1987.
The weight is 4.42g.
Please note this ring has been resized in the past and has obviously been well loved, as there is some thinning to the shank. It you needed it to be resized it would be an ideal point to add a new shank to give this many more decades of use without any concerns. It is however perfectly wearable as it is and the price reflects the condition.
Please note, this item is not new and is sold as shown and described. Vintage items will inevitably display some signs of wear.
